CHAPTER 24

MAURA

Maura stood with her mouth hanging open. The spirit who appeared was definitely not Cara. And although she’d never met this huntress Reid described, it couldn’t have been her either. This ghost was an older woman who exuded air of command, of regal bearing.

No, this was definitely not who Maura was summoning. She frowned in bewilderment. Only the called spirit should manifest. A breath of wind or a whispered voice were generally what one would expect. Most spirits wouldn’t have the energy to just show up unasked, presenting like a true waking vision.

Maura couldn’t understand what had gone wrong but there was little time for contemplation. This spirit was here now and seemed spoiling for a fight. She’d never heard of a passed-on loved one ever doing this, even when they’d died still at odds with the person in question. Spirits didn’t hold onto such earthly passion. So, why was this one so angry at the captain?

“Who are you?” Maura said in the most commanding tone she could muster. “And what do you want here?”

The spirit barely even glanced her way. “I am vengeance,” the ghost growled, her hands curling into claws. Her eyes burned with hate as they locked onto the captain. “I’ve come to stop this monster.” The ghost floated toward the captain as if not tethered to Maura’s influence, not confined by the smoke and flame as it should have been.

“Stop!” Maura called to it, wondering how to dispel it. Usually a shaman had to try to hold onto the spirits, not push them back.

“You mountain folk think only of yourselves,” the ghost growled at the captain. “Thieves and murderers, the lot of you. Those born with sacred gifts pervert them with greed.” At each accusation, the flames jumped, sparking higher. Maura worried that the upper branches of the trees around them might catch fire.

“I have forsworn the country of my birth,” the captain said, his voice low and full of anger, his cheeks flushed with what might have been shame. “My sword belongs to only to her.”

“Lies!” the ghost shrieked. “Barakani lies! Your kind killed my child, enslaved my people, and now you want our hope. I will never let your near her!”

The spirit pulled her ghostly weapons from their sheaths, her booted foot raised to step outside the ring of stones that should have kept her contained. This was trouble in the making.

Maura looked to the captain hoping to convince him to back away but his eyes shone angrily. He was poised to fight, his jaw clenched and hands fisted since he wasn’t wearing his swords. His swords! It was the first time Maura realized she couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen him with a sword. That wasn’t the captain she remembered, but she was glad of it right now. She needed to stop this before the spirit got away from her.

“I will find her,” Khoury growled, his anger matching the spirit’s as they spiraled toward violence. He moved like a snake striking, picking up a long branch sitting near the circle of stones.
